The Macallan Red Collection, the distillery’s most sought-after series of ultra-aged single malt whiskies, has recently welcomed a new addition – The Macallan 73 Years Old.
Inspired by the significance of the color red in the brand’s history, the Red Collection weaves a tale of a “red thread” that begins with Alexander Reid, the farmer and teacher who founded The Macallan in 1824. Reid’s surname, meaning “the red one” in Scots, set the tone for a legacy that was further solidified in 1903 when proprietor Roderick Kemp launched the notable Choice Old range, shipped in cases labeled with red print to distinguish it from other whiskies.
The Red Collection showcases some of the oldest and rarest whiskies ever released by The Macallan, with age statements spanning from 40 to 78 years. This collection includes three ongoing expressions 40 50, and 60 years old—available each year, as well as occasional high-age “guest releases” in collaboration with creative partners. Until 2022, the Macallan 78 Years Old was the oldest whisky the distillery had ever released.
Dating back to 1950, The Macallan 73 Years Old stands out this year as another exceptional aged Scotch whisky in the brand’s legacy.
Every bottle of The Macallan 73 Years Old is carefully hand-finished, with the year of bottling, bottle number, and strength all handwritten on the label. It also features the signature of Euan Kennedy, The Macallan’s current Lead Whisky Maker.

The presentation of The Macallan 73 Years Old is equally remarkable. Each bottle is housed in a stunning oak presentation box made from the same European oak used for the whisky’s casks. Handcrafted in the United Kingdom, the box is lined with sustainably sourced red leather from the renowned Scottish supplier, Bridge of Weir Leather. Inside, the bottle sits on an oak plinth made from repurposed cask end pieces that may bear warehouse marks or lettering, making each plinth a unique piece of The Macallan’s heritage.Whisky Maker’s Notes The Macallan Red Collection 73
ABV 44.9%, specially adjusted by Lead Whisky Maker, Euan Kennedy, to provide the perfect flavors. Colour 100% natural copper topaz. Nose Effervescent and incredibly intricate with a medley of antique oak, apricot jam, fine licorice, and treacle tart. Soft baked apple, nutmeg, and tropical notes add to the complexity. Palate Initially sweet and mouth-coating, with dates, sweet woodsmoke, bittersweet treacle toffee, and a hint of aromatic leafiness. There is a fruitiness and salinity reminiscent of a fine Palo Cortado. Finish Soft tannins, subtle spice, treacle, and a continued minerality that elongates the finish.
