What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on a device (computer, smartphone, tablet) when a website is visited. They help a website remember preferences, recognise a returning visitor, and provide certain functionality.

Why does WannaWhisky use cookies?

  • Essential functionality: so that the website works properly and securely, and so that a signed-in user stays signed in.
  • Preferences: to remember choices such as language, and the cookie choices themselves.
  • Statistics: to understand how the website is used, so that we can improve it.
  • Advertising: to measure how well our advertisements work and to show advertisements for WannaWhisky on other websites.

Types of cookies we use

Necessary and functional cookies

These cookies are needed for the website to work. They enable basic features such as navigation, submitting forms and access to signed-in areas, and they cannot be switched off. Examples include:

  • Session cookies that keep a signed-in user signed in
  • A cookie that remembers the chosen language
  • Cookies that record cookie preferences, so the consent question is not asked again on every page

Analytical and advertising cookies

We use Google Tag Manager to load Google Analytics and Google Ads. These are placed only after consent has been given, and consent can be withdrawn at any time via the consent manager below.

Google Analytics tells us how the website is used: which pages are visited, how visitors arrive, and on what kind of device. Google Ads allows us to measure how well our advertisements work and to show advertisements for WannaWhisky on other websites.

This data is not anonymous. A cookie assigns the browser an identifier, which allows visits to be recognised as belonging to the same browser over time. It does not contain a name or an email address, and we do not link it to a user account. Google Analytics does not log or store IP addresses; an IP address is used only to derive an approximate location and is then discarded.

We have configured these services to collect and share as little as they allow.

Global Privacy Control

Some browsers and extensions can send an automatic signal that the visitor does not want their data shared or sold, known as Global Privacy Control. Where we receive such a signal, we set cookie preferences to strictly necessary only and do not ask the question again, because the choice has already been made at browser level.

The older “Do Not Track” signal is no longer offered by most browsers; Safari removed it in 2019 and Firefox in 2025. Where a browser still sends it, we treat it the same way.

Third-party cookies

Some cookies are set by third-party services we use. These parties have their own privacy policies:

Our protection against automated abuse of forms is worth mentioning here, because visitors expect to find a CAPTCHA provider in this list. It runs entirely on our own servers: some forms ask the browser to solve a small computational puzzle before the request is accepted. It sets no cookie, collects nothing about the person or the device, and involves no third party. We chose this deliberately over services such as reCAPTCHA, which work by profiling the visitor.

Data collected through cookies is processed in accordance with our Privacy Policy and applicable data protection law. That page sets out who receives personal data, on what basis it is processed, how long it is kept, and what rights users have, including in relation to data collected through cookies.

We never sell cookie data or any other personal data.

Changes to this Cookie Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy to reflect changes in our practices, the technologies we use, or legal requirements. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last changed. For a significant change we may give additional notice on the website, by email to registered users, or by asking again through the consent manager.

We keep earlier versions of this policy, so that it can be established which version applied at a given time.
