At a liquor store in Enschede, a customer, just before closing time, purchased a rare bottle of The Macallan whisky for 100,000 euros, as reported by Tubantia.

It’s not a scene you often witness in a liquor store – a whisky fetching nearly a hundred thousand euros all on its own. However, this unusual event recently unfolded at Robin Berendsen’s liquor store in Enschede. Suddenly, a rare 52-year-old bottle of The Macallan Duncan Taylor was sold. The customer had previously expressed interest after coming across the bottle online.

Curious to learn more about the spirit and why it was so exceptionally expensive, the customer inquired and then left the store. About a week and a half later, Berendsen received a phone call from the same customer saying, “I’ll take it.”

The unique whisky is personally delivered by the liquor store owner to the new owner, a practice he frequently undertakes with expensive whiskies he sells. Typically, he travels abroad for this purpose, including destinations such as Switzerland and Belgium. There was even an occasion when he went to a hotel in Hamburg to meet a customer from Denmark. “It was like a drug deal,” the liquor store owner recounts. However, this time, there’s no need to leave the country. In fact, he remains in Enschede, as the buyer happens to be a resident of Enschede.

Story about The Macallan Duncan Taylor 52

The sold The Macallan whisky originates from a closed distillery, distilled in 1969, and bottled in 2022 by Duncan Taylor. There are just over 200 bottles of this 52-year-old spirit available worldwide. The liquid is bottled in a hand-blown, teardrop-shaped decanter sealed with a crystal stopper. The entire package is encased in a wooden box, cradling the bottle.

The whisky matured in ex-bourbon casks, followed by a finishing period in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks. The nose presents notes of Christmas cake, wood spices, and oak. On the palate, the drink unfolds flavors of dark chocolate, tropical fruit, and cinnamon, leading to a long and smooth finish.

Whether the whisky will be opened or kept under lock and key remains uncertain for Berendsen. Often, expensive whiskies are purchased as investments. In his store, there are bottles well-suited for such purposes, ranging from a few hundred to several thousand euros. The proceeds from The Macallan whisky sale will be used to acquire another bottle for the shop.
