The Whiskystats Whisky Index, which monitors the auction value fluctuations of the 500 most historically traded whiskies each month, saw a significant increase of nearly 80% between January 2020 and March 2022. However, from March onwards until the end of 2022, the whisky auction market experienced a widespread price reversal. During this period of just 9 months, the Whiskystats Whisky Index decreased by 16.5%, resulting in an overall market loss of 3.3% for the entire year.
2023’s Whisky Investment Key Facts
- The number of single whisky bottles traded at auction in 2023 decreased by 5% from 2022.
- Cumulative hammer prices for whisky fell back to €118 million, 19% short of 2022
- The downward trend in whisky value that started in 2022 continued throughout 2023. The Whiskystats Whisky Index fell 18.3%, the most significant annual setback over the past ten years.
- For the first time in years, lower price segments (whiskies below €250) increased auction market share. Higher price segments (above €250) lost market share.
