Glenfarclas History

The name Glenfarclas, meaning ‘valley of the green grass,’ reflects the fertile land surrounding the distillery. From the late 1790s until 1988, the distillery farm thrived. Like many ancient sites, the farm likely served as a site for illicit distillation prior to the 1823 Excise Act. It wasn’t until 13 years later that the original owner, Robert Hay, obtained a license. After Hay’s passing in 1865, his neighbor John Grant purchased the distillery for £512, and it has remained in the Grant family’s hands ever since.

Glenfarclas History Family Generation

This continuity has allowed Glenfarclas to preserve traditional whisky-making methods, driven not by nostalgia but by successful business practices. As George Grant, sixth-generation family member, states: “We have weathered through 22 recessions. We produce what we can afford, never borrowing money for production.” While the industry cut back on production during the 1980s, Glenfarclas expanded. When the market eventually rebounded, they had ample stock to sell. This balance between supplying stock for blends and retaining a significant percentage for single malt bottlings has resulted in Glenfarclas possessing more aged stocks than most distilleries. Additionally, their aversion to independent bottlers using their name has reinforced their strong brand identity.

The retention of direct fire in their stills is for quality, not for show. Steam was tried in 1981, but the conclusion was that it affected the new make spirit’s richness, prompting a return to direct fire. After all, a rich distillate is essential to withstand the tannic structure and rich fruits of ex-Sherry casks.

Today, all wood is sourced from Jerez cooper Miguel Martin, predominantly European oak ex-oloroso butts and hogsheads. The core range ages in a mix of first-fill and refill casks. Tradition doesn’t stifle innovation; in 2007, Glenfarclas released ‘The Family Casks,’ vintage releases from 1952 to 1998, showcasing their extensive stock. They’ve also been credited with pioneering cask-strength bottlings with their 105˚ release in 1968 and were early advocates of whisky tourism, opening their doors to visitors in 1973.
