Why the Name Four Roses?
The name Four Roses has a unique and romantic origin. Before founding his own distillery, Paul Jones Jr. fell deeply in love with a Southern belle. He proposed to her, but she didn’t give an immediate answer. Shortly after, at a grand event, she appeared wearing a corsage adorned with four red roses, symbolizing her acceptance of his proposal. Touched by this gesture, Paul Jones Jr. named his bourbon after this unforgettable romantic moment.
How is Four Roses Made?
Four Roses stands out as the only bourbon distillery that combines five proprietary yeast strains with two distinct grain recipes, allowing them to create 10 different bourbons, each with its own unique flavor profile. For their most popular bourbon, often referred to as Four Roses Yellow Label, all 10 recipes may be blended to achieve the desired taste.
Corn is the primary grain used in every bourbon, and Four Roses is no exception. Master distiller Jim Rutledge also incorporates rye and malted barley into the mix. The difference between the two grain recipes lies in the proportions of these grains. One recipe contains as much as 75% corn, while the other scales it back to 60%.
The five yeast strains contribute different flavor characteristics, with some adding subtle fruit notes and others bringing out spicier or floral tones. This combination of grain recipes and yeast strains results in the distinctive and varied bourbons that Four Roses is known for.
