Four Roses Whiskey Bourbon History
Four Roses is a storied name in the world of bourbon, with a history that stretches back to the late 19th century. Founded in 1888 by Paul Jones, Jr., the brand quickly gained a reputation for its smooth and flavorful whiskey. The name “Four Roses” is said to have been inspired by a romantic story involving Jones proposing to a Southern belle, who responded that if her answer was yes, she would wear a corsage of four roses to their next meeting. True to her word, she did, and the name was born.
Over the decades, Four Roses has weathered Prohibition, changes in ownership, and shifting market trends, always maintaining its commitment to quality. The brand became particularly famous for its unique approach to bourbon production, utilizing 10 distinct recipes that combine two different mashbills with five proprietary yeast strains. This dedication to craftsmanship and variety has made Four Roses a favorite among bourbon enthusiasts, solidifying its place as a key player in Kentucky’s rich whiskey heritage.
Each year, the Small Batch series blends together select Bourbons crafted from Four Roses’ 10 distinct recipes, each represented by a four-letter acronym that denotes its specific mashbill and yeast strain.
For the 2024 Four Roses Edition, the blend consists of:
- 39% – 16 Year Old OESF Bourbon (Minty, Fruity, Full Body)
- 31% – 12 Year Old OBSV Bourbon (Delicate Fruity, Spicy, Creamy)
- 23% – 15 Year Old OESK Bourbon (Spicy, Full Body)
- 7% – 20 Year Old OBSV Bourbon (Delicate Fruity, Spicy, Creamy)
This combination creates a bourbon that features creamy vanilla, honey, and brown sugar on the nose, with flavors of ripe berries and tangy citrus on the palate. Herbal notes and Four Roses’ signature mellow spice add balance, leading to a delicately complex finish.
Bottled at 54.1% ABV (108.2 Proof), the 2024 Edition Small Batch is priced at $220. It will first be available at the Four Roses visitor center in Kentucky, with a broader release across the U.S. planned for September. A total of 16,680 bottles have been produced.
