The story behind the new Gordon & MacPhail Glenlivet 1949 Release

The independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail has added a new whisky to the Private Collection. It’s an exclusive single malt from the Glenlivet Distillery that has been maturing in the cask for over 74 years.

The Gordon & MacPhail Glenlivet 1949 whisky was placed in a refill Sherry butt on New Year’s Day 1949, where it matured for over 74 years. The spirit was finally bottled on March 6th at 49.3% ABV. This makes it one of the oldest Glenlivet whiskies ever released by the bottler, joining the ranks of whiskies like the Glenlivet 1975 vintage.

The Gordon & MacPhail Glenlivet 1949 whisky is an exceptionally rare and limited release. According to Mackintosh, not every whisky enthusiast will have the chance to taste it, as it is quite scarce. There are only 192 bottles available, each priced at £35,000 (approximately 40,000 euros).

The whisky offers tasting notes that include sweet stewed fruits combined with cinnamon, aged leather, clementine mandarins, and beeswax on the nose. On the palate, you can expect flavors of autumnal spices, fruitcake, and cracked pepper, along with hints of mint, syrup, and charred oak. Unfortunately, there is no information provided about the finish.

Earlier this year, Gordon & MacPhail announced that they would be discontinuing their independent bottling operations. They are no longer purchasing whisky for this purpose, which means that existing stocks will gradually be depleted. However, in the coming years, we can still expect to see special releases like the Gordon & MacPhail Glenlivet 1949.
