This is te new Chichibu on the way floor malted 2024 edition. Japan’s esteemed Chichibu distillery commemorates its 16th year, marking a significant milestone in its inspiring journey that has influenced craft distillers worldwide.
In celebration, Chichibu unveils the 4th Edition of its beloved On The Way expression, embodying the distillery’s continual evolution towards the future.
The latest release, Chichibu On The Way Floor Malted 2024 Edition, boasts fruity notes intertwined with luscious plums and peaches, a testament to its distinct character. Utilizing the Floor Malting process infuses the expression with rustic barley flavors, evoking nostalgia and culminating in a smooth, enduring finish.
The 2024 Chichibu On The Way Edition
The 2024 Edition of Chichibu’s On The Way expression will be presented at a robust 54.5% ABV, with a limited release of 12,000 bottles.
This marks the return of the On The Way expression from Chichibu since its last appearance in 2019. Notably, the 2013 and 2015 releases were cherished moments for enthusiasts. However, this 4th Edition holds a distinct significance with its integration of floor malting, a technique previously showcased in other celebrated Chichibu expressions.
Floor malting Chichibu method
Floor malting is a traditional method where soaked barley grains are spread out on smooth concrete floors to sprout and undergo the malting process, usually lasting 4-5 days. During this time, the barley needs to be turned regularly, either by hand or machine, to prevent root growth and mat formation. This meticulous process is believed by some distillers to impart a more rustic, hearty, and nutty flavor to the whisky. It also requires precise timing to determine when the barley has reached the optimal sugar level before it is kilned.
In contrast, industrial box malting is more common, involving large containers where barley is mechanically agitated.
