Loch Lomond 50 2024 release

This spectacularly presented Loch Lomond 50 Highland single malt was distilled on May 29, 1973, in the distillery’s distinctive pot stills. It then rested for nearly four decades in American oak casks amid the breathtaking scenery of Loch Lomond. In 2017, after an additional six years of aging in fresh ex-bourbon casks, the liquid was transferred to Oloroso sherry casks to further enhance the complexity of this elegant single malt. One of just only 100 bottles, this rare whisky has slumbered in the shadow of Ben Lomond for half a century.

The result is a light spirit with hints of white-fleshed fruits and zesty citrus, giving it a tropical character often found in older, fruit-forward whiskies. While aging in the Bourbon casks, the spirit developed a rich, creamy vanilla flavor that perfectly complements its fruity aroma. The Oloroso cask influence is noticeable on the nose with its nutmeg spiciness, evolving into a warm cinnamon taste and finishing with a wonderfully long, woody spice.

The Loch Lomond distillery

Loch Lomond is unique as the only distillery in Scotland using straight neck pot stills and one of the few with its own cooperage. It started production in 1966 as a sister distillery to the now-closed Lowland Littlemill Distillery. Master Blender Michael Henry, who joined in 2007, brought experience from brewing and distilling in Belfast and Glasgow. His expertise in flavor development during fermentation is evident in his whisky blending at Loch Lomond. The distillery is known for its fruit flavors, achieved through a focus on yeast, extended fermentation times, and innovative distillation methods. Michael explains this release:

Loch Lomond 50

“Our stills are known for imparting fruity notes to the whisky, and with the 50 Year Old, we’ve allowed it time to truly concentrate that character, resulting in a rich, tropical fruit flavor. After maturing in our warehouse for 50 years, the significant cask influence adds deep complexity. It’s an honor to be the custodian of such magnificent whiskies with a rich history like this Loch Lomond 50 Year Old.”

We have highlighted three more stunning Loch Lomond releases for you, complete with tasting notes. I personally have the Loch Lomond 21 Year Old opened at home. It’s a delightful, fruity whisky and highly recommended!
