Condition Grades
Reliably grade bottles, packaging and other items
The grading system below is intended to help you reliably assess both your own bottles and those you intend to purchase.
Condition Grades for Bottles
- Mint
- No visible wear. Glass perfectly clear. Label crisp, unfaded, and fully intact. Capsule pristine with no scuffs, dents, or lifting. Fill level appropriate for age with zero signs of seepage.
- Great
- Minor, isolated signs of handling. Glass clean with no marks. Label shows slight edge wear or micro-wrinkles but remains fully intact. Capsule may show a tiny scuff or superficial crease. No leakage; fill level normal for age.
- Good
- Light but noticeable wear. Small surface marks on glass. Label may show minor discoloration, small scratches, or slight corner lifting. Capsule may have modest scuffing or dents that do not compromise integrity. No active leakage; fill level acceptable.
- Fair
- Clear overall wear. Visible scratches, scuffs, or small chips that do not affect structural stability. Label may be partially worn, creased, or slightly torn. Capsule may be dented or misshapen but still intact. Fill level may be modestly lower than typical for age.
- Damaged
- Significant wear or faults. Chips, pronounced scratches, or cracks that do not render the bottle unsafe but materially affect appearance. Label may be torn or missing sections. Capsule may be heavily damaged. Past leakage possible; fill level may be noticeably low.
- Incomplete
- Missing essential parts: label largely missing, capsule removed or absent, secondary label missing, or other components that prevent a full presentation. Bottle is intact but incomplete.
- Opened
- Seal or capsule has been broken or removed. Liquid level reflects consumption. The condition of the container itself should be graded separately using the scale above.
Condition Grades for Packaging
Applies to boxes, tubes, tins, cartons, and presentation cases.
- Mint
- No wear or deformation. No scratches, tears, dents, or discoloration. Structure firm and clean. All inserts, papers, or accessories present and pristine.
- Great
- Very minor signs of handling. Small, isolated surface marks or tiny corner softening. No tears. Structure fully intact. All inserts present and clean.
- Good
- Light wear visible. Softened edges, small scratches, or slight rubbing. Minor, short creases possible. Structure solid with no major deformation. Inserts present and undamaged.
- Fair
- Noticeable general wear. Creases, scuffs, mild discoloration, or small tears. Corners may be visibly worn. Structure intact but clearly used. Inserts may show wear but remain present.
- Damaged
- Significant wear or faults. Larger tears, dents, crushed areas, moisture damage, or strong discoloration. Structure partially compromised but still functional. Inserts may be damaged.
- Incomplete
- Missing lid, tube cap, major section, or required internal supports or inserts. Structure may be intact or partially damaged, but key components are absent.
